Introduction

Ghufaylah Prayer is recited in the period between the Sunset (Maghrib) and the Evening (Isha') Prayers. This prayer consists of two units.

First Rak'at

After reciting Surah al-Fatiha, recite the following verses — without reciting Bismillah before them — from Surah al-Anbiya (21:87–88):

وَذَا النُّونِ إِذْ ذَهَبَ مُغَاضِبًا فَظَنَّ أَنْ لَنْ نَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ فَنَادَى فِي الظُّلُمَاتِ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ ۝ فَاسْتَجَبْنَا لَهُ وَنَجَّيْنَاهُ مِنَ الْغَمِّ وَكَذَلِكَ نُنْجِي الْمُؤْمِنِينَ

Wa dha-n-nūni idh dhahaba mughāḍiban fa-ẓanna an lan naqdira ʿalayhi fa-nādā fi-ẓ-ẓulumāti an lā ilāha illā anta subḥānaka innī kuntu mina-ẓ-ẓālimīn. Fasta-jabna lahu wa najjaynāhu mina-l-ghammi wa kadhālika nunjī-l-muʾminīn.

And (mention) Dhu'n-Nun (Jonah), when he went off in anger and deemed that We would not suppress his sustenance. But he cried out in the darkness: "There is no god save You. Be You Glorified! Lo! I have been a wrongdoer." Then We heard his prayer and saved him from the anguish. Thus do We save the believers.

Second Rak'at

After reciting Surah al-Fatiha, recite the following verse — without reciting Bismillah before it — from Surah al-An'am (6:59):

وَعِنْدَهُ مَفَاتِحُ الْغَيْبِ لَا يَعْلَمُهَا إِلَّا هُوَ وَيَعْلَمُ مَا فِي الْبَرِّ وَالْبَحْرِ وَمَا تَسْقُطُ مِنْ وَرَقَةٍ إِلَّا يَعْلَمُهَا وَلَا حَبَّةٍ فِي ظُلُمَاتِ الْأَرْضِ وَلَا رَطْبٍ وَلَا يَابِسٍ إِلَّا فِي كِتَابٍ مُبِينٍ

Wa ʿindahu mafātīḥu-l-ghaybi lā yaʿlamuhā illā huwa wa yaʿlamu mā fi-l-barri wa-l-baḥri wa mā tasquṭu min waraqatin illā yaʿlamuhā wa lā ḥabbatin fī ẓulumāti-l-arḍi wa lā raṭbin wa lā yābisin illā fī kitābin mubīn.

And with Him are the keys of the Invisible. None but He knows them. And He knows what is in the land and the sea. Not a leaf falls but He knows it, not a grain amid the darkness of the earth, naught of wet or dry but it is noted in a clear record.

Qunut

After the second rak'at, raise both hands for Qunut and say:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ بِمَفَاتِحِ الْغَيْبِ الَّتِي لَا يَعْلَمُهَا إِلَّا أَنْتَ أَنْ تُصَلِّيَ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ

Allāhumma innī asʾaluka bi-mafātīḥi-l-ghaybi-llatī lā yaʿlamuhā illā anta an tuṣalliya ʿalā Muḥammadin wa ālih…

O Allah, I beseech You in the name of the Keys of the Invisible world that none knows save You; (please) send blessings to Muhammad and his Household…

Then mention your personal needs to Allah.

Then say:

اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ وَلِيُّ نِعْمَتِي وَالْقَادِرُ عَلَى طَلِبَتِي تَعْلَمُ حَاجَتِي فَأَسْأَلُكَ بِحَقِّ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَيْهِمُ السَّلَامُ لَمَّا قَضَيْتَهَا لِي

Allāhumma anta waliyyu niʿmatī wa-l-qādiru ʿalā ṭalibatī taʿlamu ḥājatī fa-asʾaluka bi-ḥaqqi Muḥammadin wa ālihī ʿalayhi wa ʿalayhimu-s-salāmu lammā qaḍaytahā lī.

O Allah, You are the source of the graces that I have, You have the power to respond to my request, and You know my needs; I therefore beseech You in the name of Muhammad and his Household, peace be upon him and them, to grant me my needs.

Complete the Ruku, Sujud, Tashahhud, and Salam as normal.
