Namaz-e-Wahshat
A two-rak'at prayer offered for the departed soul on the night of burial.
Introduction
It is most important to give Sadaqa on behalf of the deceased on the first night of burial.
It is befitting that on the first night after the burial of a dead person, two Raka'ats of Wahshat prayers be offered for it.
Wahshat prayers can be offered in the night following the burial of the dead body at any time, but it is better to offer it in the early hours of the night after Isha' prayers.
If it is proposed to transfer the dead body to some other town or its burial is delayed owing to some reason, the Wahshat prayers should be deferred till the first night of its burial.
Method
First Rak'at
After reciting Surah al-Hamd, recite Ayatul Kursi once:
Allāhu lā ilāha illā howa, al-ḥayyul qayyūm, lā taʾkhudhuhu sinatun wa lā nawm, lahu mā fi-s-samāwāti wa mā fi-l-arḍ, man dha-l-ladhī yashfaʿu ʿindahu illā bi-idhnih, yaʿlamu mā bayna aydīhim wa mā khalfahum, wa lā yuḥīṭūna bi-shayʾin min ʿilmihi illā bi-mā shāʾ, wasiʿa kursiyyuhu-s-samāwāti wa-l-arḍ, wa lā yaʾūduhu ḥifẓuhumā, wa huwa-l-ʿAliyyu-l-ʿAẓīm.
Allah — there is no god except Him — is the Living One, the All-sustainer. Neither drowsiness befalls Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that may intercede with Him except with His permission? He knows what is before them and what is behind them, and they do not comprehend anything of His knowledge except what He wishes. His seat embraces the heavens and the earth and He is not wearied by their preservation, and He is the All-exalted, the All-supreme.
Lā ikrāha fi-d-dīn, qad tabayyana-r-rushdu mina-l-ghayy, faman yakfur bi-ṭ-ṭāghūti wa yuʾmin bi-llāhi faqadis-tamsaka bi-l-ʿurwati-l-wuthqā la-nfisāma lahā, wa-llāhu samīʿun ʿalīm.
There is no compulsion in religion: rectitude has become distinct from error. So one who disavows false deities and has faith in Allah has held fast to the firmest handle for which there is no breaking; and Allah is all-hearing, all-knowing.
Allāhu waliyyu-l-ladhīna āmanū yukhrijuhum mina-ẓ-ẓulumāti ila-n-nūr, wa-l-ladhīna kafarū awliyāʾuhumu-ṭ-ṭāghūtu yukhrijūnahum mina-n-nūri ila-ẓ-ẓulumāt, ulāʾika aṣḥābu-n-nār, hum fīhā khālidūn.
Allah is the guardian of the faithful: He brings them out of darkness into light. As for the faithless, their guardians are the false deities, who drive them out of light into darkness. They shall be the inmates of the Fire, and they will remain in it forever. (Surah al-Baqarah 2:255–257)
Second Rak'at
After reciting Surah al-Hamd, recite Surah al-Qadr (Inna Anzalnahu) ten times.
After Salam
After saying the Salam, recite the following supplication, inserting the name of the deceased:
Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā Muḥammadin wa āli Muḥammadin wa-bʿath thawābahā ilā qabri [name of the deceased]
O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and the Family of Muhammad, and send the reward of this prayer to the grave of [name of the deceased].
