Ziyarat Ashura
One of the most important and virtuous Ziyarats of Imam Hussain (AS). Recommended daily and especially on the day of Ashura.
Introduction
Ziyarat e Ashura is one of the most revered acts of devotion. It was narrated by Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (AS) and recorded by Alqama ibn Muhammad al-Hadhrami. Whoever recites it on the day of Ashura — or on any day — will receive immense reward, and it serves as a means of drawing close to Allah and His Messenger.
Recite it facing the direction of Karbala, with purity and deep sorrow for the sacrifice of Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions.
How to Perform
- Face the direction of Karbala
- Recite the Ziyarat with presence of heart
- After completing: recite La'nat 100 times, then Salam 100 times
- Recite the closing section and then perform Sajda (prostration)

Opening Salutations
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا ابْنَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا خِيَرَةَ اللَّهِ وَابْنَ خِيَرَتِهِ
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا ابْنَ أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَابْنَ سَيِّدِ الْوَصِيِّينَ
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا ابْنَ فَاطِمَةَ سَيِّدَةِ نِسَاءِ الْعَالَمِينَ
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا ثَارَ اللَّهِ وَابْنَ ثَارِهِ وَالْوِتْرَ الْمَوْتُورَ
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَى الأَرْوَاحِ الَّتِي حَلَّتْ بِفِنَائِكَ
عَلَيْكُمْ مِنِّي جَمِيعاً سَلاَمُ اللَّهِ أَبَداً مَا بَقِيتُ وَبَقِيَ اللَّيْلُ وَالنَّهَارُ
As-salāmu ʿalayka yā Abā ʿAbdillāh. As-salāmu ʿalayka yā-bna Rasūlillāh. As-salāmu ʿalayka yā khiyarata-llāhi wa-bna khiyaratih. As-salāmu ʿalayka yā-bna Amīri-l-muʾminīna wa-bna sayyidi-l-waṣiyyīn. As-salāmu ʿalayka yā-bna Fāṭimata sayyidati nisāʾi-l-ʿālamīn. As-salāmu ʿalayka yā thāra-llāhi wa-bna thārihi wa-l-witra-l-mawṭūr. As-salāmu ʿalayka wa ʿalā-l-arwāḥi-llatī ḥallat bifināʾik. ʿAlaykum minnī jamīʿan salāmu-llāhi abadan mā baqītu wa baqiya-l-laylu wa-n-nahār.
Translation: Peace be upon you, O Abu Abdullah. Peace be upon you, O son of the Messenger of Allah. Peace be upon you, O chosen one of Allah and son of His chosen one. Peace be upon you, O son of the Commander of the Faithful and son of the chief of the Prophets' successors. Peace be upon you, O son of Fatimah, the doyenne of the women of the worlds. Peace be upon you, O vengeance of Allah, son of His vengeance, and the unavenged so far. Peace be upon you and upon the souls that resided in your courtyard. Peace of Allah be upon all of you from me forever, as long as I am existent and as long as there are day and night.
The Lamentation
يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ لَقَدْ عَظُمَتِ الرَّزِيَّةُ
وَجَلَّتْ وَعَظُمَتِ الْمُصِيبَةُ بِكَ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى جَمِيعِ أَهْلِ الإِسْلاَمِ
وَجَلَّتْ وَعَظُمَتْ مُصِيبَتُكَ فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ عَلَى جَمِيعِ أَهْلِ السَّمَاوَاتِ
Yā Abā ʿAbdillāh, laqad ʿazumat-ir-razziyyah. Wa jallat wa ʿazumat-il-muṣībatu bika ʿalaynā wa ʿalā jamīʿi ahli-l-islām. Wa jallat wa ʿazumat muṣībatuka fi-s-samāwāti ʿalā jamīʿi ahli-s-samāwāt.
Translation: O Abu Abdullah, unbearable is the sorrow and excruciating and unbearable is the misfortune of you for us and for all the people of Islam. Excruciating and unbearable has been your misfortune in the heavens for all the inhabitants of the heavens.
The Curses
فَلَعَنَ اللَّهُ أُمَّةً أَسَّسَتْ أَسَاسَ الظُّلْمِ وَالْجَوْرِ عَلَيْكُمْ أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ
وَلَعَنَ اللَّهُ أُمَّةً دَفَعَتْكُمْ عَنْ مَقَامِكُمْ وَأَزَالَتْكُمْ عَنْ مَرَاتِبِكُمُ الَّتِي رَتَّبَكُمُ اللَّهُ فِيهَا
وَلَعَنَ اللَّهُ أُمَّةً قَتَلَتْكُمْ
وَلَعَنَ اللَّهُ الْمُمَهِّدِينَ لَهُمْ بِالتَّمْكِينِ مِنْ قِتَالِكُمْ
بَرِئْتُ إِلَى اللَّهِ وَإِلَيْكُمْ مِنْهُمْ وَمِنْ أَشْيَاعِهِمْ وَأَتْبَاعِهِمْ وَأَوْلِيَائِهِمْ
Falaʿana-llāhu ummatan assasat asāsa-ẓ-ẓulmi wa-l-jawri ʿalaykum ahla-l-bayt. Wa laʿana-llāhu ummatan dafaʿatkum ʿan maqāmikum wa azālatkum ʿan marātibikum allatī rattabakumu-llāhu fīhā. Wa laʿana-llāhu ummatan qatalatukum. Wa laʿana-llāhu-l-mumahhidīna lahum bi-t-tamkīni min qitālikum. Bariʾtu ila-llāhi wa ilaykum minhum wa min ashyāʿihim wa atbāʿihim wa awliyāʾihim.
Translation: So, may Allah curse the people who laid the basis of persecution and wronging against you, O Members of the Household. May Allah curse the people who drove you away from your position and removed you from your ranks that Allah has put you in. May Allah curse the people who slew you. May Allah curse those who paved the way for them and made it possible for them to fight against you. I repudiate them in the presence of Allah and you, and repudiate their devotees, followers, and loyalists.
Declaration of Loyalty and Enmity
يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ إِنِّي سِلْمٌ لِمَنْ سَالَمَكُمْ
وَحَرْبٌ لِمَنْ حَارَبَكُمْ إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ
وَلَعَنَ اللَّهُ آلَ زِيَادٍ وَآلَ مَرْوَانَ
وَلَعَنَ اللَّهُ بَنِي أُمَيَّةَ قَاطِبَةً
وَلَعَنَ اللَّهُ ابْنَ مَرْجَانَةَ
وَلَعَنَ اللَّهُ عُمَرَ بْنَ سَعْدٍ
وَلَعَنَ اللَّهُ شِمْراً
وَلَعَنَ اللَّهُ أُمَّةً أَسْرَجَتْ وَأَلْجَمَتْ وَتَنَقَّبَتْ لِقِتَالِكَ
Yā Abā ʿAbdillāh, innī silmun li-man sālamakum wa ḥarbun li-man ḥārabakum ilā yawmi-l-qiyāmah. Wa laʿana-llāhu āla Ziyādin wa āla Marwān. Wa laʿana-llāhu banī Umayyata qāṭibah. Wa laʿana-llāhu-bna Marjānah. Wa laʿana-llāhu ʿUmara-bna Saʿd. Wa laʿana-llāhu Shimrā. Wa laʿana-llāhu ummatan asrajat wa aljamat wa tanaqqabat liqitālik.
Translation: O Abu Abdullah, I am at peace with those who are at peace with you and at war against those who have fought against you up to the Resurrection Day. May Allah curse the family of Ziyad and the family of Marwan. May Allah curse the descendants of Umayyah altogether. May Allah curse the son of Marjanah. May Allah curse Umar the son of Saʿd. May Allah curse Shimr. May Allah curse the people who saddled up, bridled, and masked themselves in preparation for fighting against you.
Personal Prayer
بِأَبِي أَنْتَ وَأُمِّي لَقَدْ عَظُمَ مُصَابِي بِكَ
فَأَسْأَلُ اللَّهَ الَّذِي أَكْرَمَ مَقَامَكَ وَأَكْرَمَنِي بِكَ
أَنْ يَرْزُقَنِي طَلَبَ ثَأْرِكَ مَعَ إِمَامٍ مَنْصُورٍ مِنْ أَهْلِ بَيْتِ مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ
اَللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْنِي عِنْدَكَ وَجِيهاً بِالْحُسَيْنِ عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالآخِرَةِ
Biʾabī anta wa ummī, laqad ʿazuma muṣābī bik. Fa-asʾalu-llāha-lladhī akrama maqāmaka wa akramanī bika an yarzuqanī ṭalaba thaʾrika maʿa imāmin manṣūrin min ahli bayti Muḥammadin ṣalla-llāhu ʿalayhi wa ālih. Allāhumma-jʿalnī ʿindaka wajīhan bi-l-Ḥusayni ʿalayhi-s-salāmu fi-d-dunyā wa-l-ākhirah.
Translation: May my father and mother be ransoms for you. Extremely insufferable is my grief for you; so I beseech Allah Who has honoured your position and honoured me because of you, to grant me the chance to avenge you with a Divinely supported leader from the Household of Muhammad, peace be upon him and his Household. O Allah, make me illustrious in Your sight through al-Husayn, peace be upon him, in this world and in the Hereafter.
Declaration of Seeking Nearness to Allah
يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ إِنِّي أَتَقَرَّبُ إِلَى اللَّهِ وَإِلَى رَسُولِهِ
وَإِلَى أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَإِلَى فَاطِمَةَ وَإِلَى الْحَسَنِ وَإِلَيْكَ
بِمُوَالاَتِكَ وَبِالْبَرَاءَةِ مِمَّنْ قَاتَلَكَ وَنَصَبَ لَكَ الْحَرْبَ
وَبِالْبَرَاءَةِ مِمَّنْ أَسَّسَ أَسَاسَ الظُّلْمِ وَالْجَوْرِ عَلَيْكُمْ
إِنِّي سِلْمٌ لِمَنْ سَالَمَكُمْ وَحَرْبٌ لِمَنْ حَارَبَكُمْ
وَوَلِيٌّ لِمَنْ وَالاَكُمْ وَعَدُوٌّ لِمَنْ عَادَاكُمْ
فَأَسْأَلُ اللَّهَ الَّذِي أَكْرَمَنِي بِمَعْرِفَتِكُمْ أَنْ يَجْعَلَنِي مَعَكُمْ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالآخِرَةِ
وَأَنْ يُثَبِّتَ لِي عِنْدَكُمْ قَدَمَ صِدْقٍ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالآخِرَةِ
Yā Abā ʿAbdillāh, innī ataqarrabu ila-llāhi wa ilā rasūlihi wa ilā amīri-l-muʾminīna wa ilā Fāṭimata wa ila-l-Ḥasani wa ilayka bi-muwālātika wa bi-l-barāʾati mimman qātalaka wa naṣaba laka-l-ḥarb. Wa bi-l-barāʾati mimman assasa asāsa-ẓ-ẓulmi wa-l-jawri ʿalaykum. Innī silmun li-man sālamakum wa ḥarbun li-man ḥārabakum wa waliyyun li-man wālākum wa ʿaduwwun li-man ʿādākum. Fa-asʾalu-llāha-lladhī akramanī bi-maʿrifatikum an yajʿalanī maʿakum fi-d-dunyā wa-l-ākhirah. Wa an yuthabbita lī ʿindakum qadama ṣidqin fi-d-dunyā wa-l-ākhirah.
Translation: O Abu Abdullah, I seek nearness to Allah, to His Messenger, to the Commander of the Faithful, to Fatimah, to al-Hasan, and to you — by declaring loyalty to you and repudiating those who fought against you and incurred your hostility, and those who laid the basis of persecution and wronging against you. I am at peace with those who have been at peace with you, at war against those who fought against you, loyal to those who are loyal to you, and enemy of those who have shown enmity towards you. So I beseech Allah, Who has honoured me with recognising you, to include me with you in this world and in the Hereafter, and to make firm for me a step of honesty with you in this world and in the Hereafter.
Closing Prayers
اَللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْنِي فِي مَقَامِي هَذَا مِمَّنْ تَنَالُهُ مِنْكَ صَلَوَاتٌ وَرَحْمَةٌ وَمَغْفِرَةٌ
اَللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْ مَحْيَايَ مَحْيَا مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَمَمَاتِي مَمَاتَ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ
Allāhumma-jʿalnī fī maqāmī hādhā mimman tanāluhu minka ṣalawātun wa raḥmatun wa maghfirah. Allāhumma-jʿal maḥyāya maḥyā Muḥammadin wa āli Muḥammadin wa mamātī mamāta Muḥammadin wa āli Muḥammad.
Translation: O Allah, make me in this standing one of those who receive blessings, mercy, and forgiveness from You. O Allah, make my life the life of Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad, and my death the death of Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad.
La'nat — Recite 100 Times
اَللَّهُمَّ الْعَنْ أَوَّلَ ظَالِمٍ ظَلَمَ حَقَّ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ
وَآخِرَ تَابِعٍ لَهُ عَلَى ذَلِكَ
اَللَّهُمَّ الْعَنِ الْعِصَابَةَ الَّتِي جَاهَدَتِ الْحُسَيْنَ
وَشَايَعَتْ وَبَايَعَتْ وَتَابَعَتْ عَلَى قَتْلِهِ
اَللَّهُمَّ الْعَنْهُمْ جَمِيعاً
Allāhumma-lʿan awwala ẓālimin ẓalama ḥaqqa Muḥammadin wa āli Muḥammadin wa ākhira tābiʿin lahu ʿalā dhālik. Allāhumma-lʿani-l-ʿiṣābata-llatī jāhadat-il-Ḥusayna wa shāyaʿat wa bāyaʿat wa tābaʿat ʿalā qatlih. Allāhumma-lʿanhum jamīʿā.
Translation: O Allah, pour curses upon the foremost persecutor who usurped the right of Muhammad and Muhammad's Household, and the last follower who acceded to his deed. O Allah, pour curses upon the gang that struggled against al-Husayn, who supported each other, paid homage to his enemies, and participated in slaying him. O Allah, pour curses upon all of them.
Salam — Recite 100 Times
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ
وَعَلَى الأَرْوَاحِ الَّتِي حَلَّتْ بِفِنَائِكَ
عَلَيْكَ مِنِّي سَلاَمُ اللَّهِ أَبَداً مَا بَقِيتُ وَبَقِيَ اللَّيْلُ وَالنَّهَارُ
وَلاَ جَعَلَهُ اللَّهُ آخِرَ الْعَهْدِ مِنِّي لِزِيَارَتِكُمْ
اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَى الْحُسَيْنِ وَعَلَى عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ
وَعَلَى أَوْلاَدِ الْحُسَيْنِ وَعَلَى أَصْحَابِ الْحُسَيْنِ
As-salāmu ʿalayka yā Abā ʿAbdillāh wa ʿalā-l-arwāḥi-llatī ḥallat bifināʾik. ʿAlayka minnī salāmu-llāhi abadan mā baqītu wa baqiya-l-laylu wa-n-nahār. Wa lā jaʿalahu-llāhu ākhira-l-ʿahdi minnī li-ziyāratikum. As-salāmu ʿala-l-Ḥusayni wa ʿalā ʿAliyyi-bni-l-Ḥusayni wa ʿalā awlādi-l-Ḥusayni wa ʿalā aṣḥābi-l-Ḥusayn.
Translation: Peace be upon you, O Abu Abdullah, and upon the souls that gathered in your courtyard. Peace of Allah be upon you from me forever, as long as I exist and as long as there are day and night. May Allah not cause this to be the last of my visits to you. Peace be upon al-Husayn, upon Ali ibn al-Husayn, upon the sons of al-Husayn, and upon the companions of al-Husayn.
Then Recite
اَللَّهُمَّ خُصَّ أَنْتَ أَوَّلَ ظَالِمٍ بِاللَّعْنِ مِنِّي وَابْدَأْ بِهِ أَوَّلاً
ثُمَّ الْعَنِ الثَّانِيَ وَالثَّالِثَ وَالرَّابِعَ
اَللَّهُمَّ الْعَنْ يَزِيدَ خَامِساً
وَالْعَنْ عُبَيْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ زِيَادٍ وَابْنَ مَرْجَانَةَ وَعُمَرَ بْنَ سَعْدٍ وَشِمْراً
وَآلَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ وَآلَ زِيَادٍ وَآلَ مَرْوَانَ إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ
Allāhumma khuṣṣa anta awwala ẓālimin bi-l-laʿni minnī wa-bdaʾ bihi awwalā. Thumma-lʿani-th-thāniya wa-th-thālitha wa-r-rābiʿ. Allāhumma-lʿan Yazīda khāmisā. Wa-lʿan ʿUbaydullāhi-bna Ziyādin wa-bna Marjānata wa ʿUmara-bna Saʿdin wa Shimrā. Wa āla Abī Sufyāna wa āla Ziyādin wa āla Marwāna ilā yawmi-l-qiyāmah.
Translation: O Allah, pour special curses on the foremost persecutor and begin with him first, then pour curses on the second, the third, and the fourth. O Allah, curse Yazid fifthly, and curse Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad, the son of Marjanah, Umar ibn Saʿd, and Shimr, and the family of Abu Sufyan, the family of Ziyad, and the family of Marwan — up to the Resurrection Day.
Sajda (Prostration)
Prostrate yourself and recite:
اَللَّهُمَّ لَكَ الْحَمْدُ حَمْدَ الشَّاكِرِينَ لَكَ عَلَى مُصَابِهِمْ
اَلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ عَلَى عَظِيمِ رَزِيَّتِي
اَللَّهُمَّ ارْزُقْنِي شَفَاعَةَ الْحُسَيْنِ يَوْمَ الْوُرُودِ
وَثَبِّتْ لِي قَدَمَ صِدْقٍ عِنْدَكَ مَعَ الْحُسَيْنِ وَأَصْحَابِ الْحُسَيْنِ
Allāhumma laka-l-ḥamdu ḥamda-sh-shākirīna laka ʿalā muṣābihim. Al-ḥamdu li-llāhi ʿalā ʿaẓīmi razziyyatī. Allāhumma-rzuqnī shafāʿata-l-Ḥusayni yawma-l-wurūd. Wa thabbit lī qadama ṣidqin ʿindaka maʿa-l-Ḥusayni wa aṣḥābi-l-Ḥusayn.
Translation: O Allah, all praise be to You — the praise of those who thank You despite their misfortunes. All praise be to Allah for my great grief. O Allah, grant me the intercession of al-Husayn on the Day of Coming to You, and make firm for me with You a step of honesty alongside al-Husayn and the companions of al-Husayn.
