Introduction

Ziyarat Warisa (Ziyarat of the Inheritor) addresses Imam Hussain (AS) as the divine inheritor of all the prophets throughout history. It acknowledges his spiritual lineage from Adam through to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and testifies to his unparalleled station.

It is recommended to be recited on Thursday nights and daily, and is especially used as a means of presenting personal needs before Allah through the intercession of the Imam.

How to Perform

Face the direction of Karbala and recite with presence of heart. The Ziyarat may be recited from any location — the physical acts at the tomb are replaced by facing the qibla direction of the shrine.

Salutations on the Prophets

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَارِثَ آدَمَ صَفْوَةِ اللَّهِ
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَارِثَ نُوحٍ نَبِيِّ اللَّهِ
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَارِثَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ خَلِيلِ اللَّهِ
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَارِثَ مُوسَى كَلِيمِ اللَّهِ
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَارِثَ عِيسَى رُوحِ اللَّهِ
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَارِثَ مُحَمَّدٍ حَبِيبِ اللَّهِ
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَارِثَ أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ

As-salāmu ʿalayka yā wāritha Ādama ṣafwati-llāh. As-salāmu ʿalayka yā wāritha Nūḥin nabiyyi-llāh. As-salāmu ʿalayka yā wāritha Ibrāhīma khalīli-llāh. As-salāmu ʿalayka yā wāritha Mūsā kalīmi-llāh. As-salāmu ʿalayka yā wāritha ʿĪsā rūḥi-llāh. As-salāmu ʿalayka yā wāritha Muḥammadin ḥabībi-llāh. As-salāmu ʿalayka yā wāritha amīri-l-muʾminīn.

Translation: Peace be upon you, O inheritor of Adam, the choice of Allah. Peace be upon you, O inheritor of Noah, the prophet of Allah. Peace be upon you, O inheritor of Ibrahim, the intimate friend of Allah. Peace be upon you, O inheritor of Musa, he who spoke to Allah. Peace be upon you, O inheritor of Isa, the spirit of Allah. Peace be upon you, O inheritor of Muhammad, the most beloved of Allah. Peace be upon you, O inheritor of the Commander of the Faithful.

Salutations on His Lineage

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا ابْنَ مُحَمَّدٍ الْمُصْطَفَى
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا ابْنَ عَلِيٍّ الْمُرْتَضَى
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا ابْنَ فَاطِمَةَ الزَّهْرَاءِ
اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا ابْنَ خَدِيجَةَ الْكُبْرَى

As-salāmu ʿalayka yā-bna Muḥammadin-al-muṣṭafā. As-salāmu ʿalayka yā-bna ʿAliyyin-al-murtaḍā. As-salāmu ʿalayka yā-bna Fāṭimata-z-zahrāʾ. As-salāmu ʿalayka yā-bna Khadījata-l-kubrā.

Translation: Peace be upon you, O son of Muhammad the Well-Chosen. Peace be upon you, O son of Ali the Well-Pleased. Peace be upon you, O son of Fatimah the Luminous Lady. Peace be upon you, O son of Khadijah the Grand Lady.

The Vengeance Declaration

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا ثَارَ اللَّهِ وَابْنَ ثَارِهِ وَالْوِتْرَ الْمَوْتُورَ

As-salāmu ʿalayka yā thāra-llāhi wa-bna thārihi wa-l-witra-l-mawṭūr

Translation: Peace be upon you, O vengeance of Allah, son of His vengeance, and the unavenged so far.

Testimony of His Deeds

أَشْهَدُ أَنَّكَ قَدْ أَقَمْتَ الصَّلَاةَ وَآتَيْتَ الزَّكَاةَ وَأَمَرْتَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَنَهَيْتَ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ وَأَطَعْتَ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ حَتَّى أَتَاكَ الْيَقِينُ

Translation: I bear witness that you established the prayer, gave zakat, commanded good, forbade evil, and obeyed Allah and His Messenger until death arrived.

Three Curses

فَلَعَنَ اللَّهُ أُمَّةً قَتَلَتْكَ
وَلَعَنَ اللَّهُ أُمَّةً ظَلَمَتْكَ
وَلَعَنَ اللَّهُ أُمَّةً سَمِعَتْ بِذَلِكَ فَرَضِيَتْ بِهِ

Falaʿana-llāhu ummatan qatalatka. Wa laʿana-llāhu ummatan ẓalamatka. Wa laʿana-llāhu ummatan samiʿat bidhālika fa-raḍiyat bih.

Translation: May Allah curse the people who slew you. May Allah curse the people who wronged you. May Allah curse the people who heard of it and were satisfied with it.

Testimony of His Origin

أَشْهَدُ أَنَّكَ كُنْتَ نُوراً فِي الْأَصْلَابِ الشَّامِخَةِ وَالْأَرْحَامِ الْمُطَهَّرَةِ لَمْ تُنَجِّسْكَ الْجَاهِلِيَّةُ بِأَنْجَاسِهَا وَلَمْ تُلْبِسْكَ مِنْ مُدْلَهِمَّاتِ ثِيَابِهَا

Translation: I bear witness that you were light in sublime loins and purified wombs. The Age of Ignorance could not taint you with its filth, nor dress you in its murky garments.

Testimony — Pillar of Religion

وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّكَ مِنْ دَعَائِمِ الدِّينِ وَأَرْكَانِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ

Translation: And I bear witness that you are among the mainstays of religion and the supports of the faithful believers.

Declaration of Faith

وَأُشْهِدُ اللَّهَ وَمَلَائِكَتَهُ وَأَنْبِيَاءَهُ وَرُسُلَهُ أَنِّي بِكُمْ مُؤْمِنٌ وَبِإِيَابِكُمْ مُوقِنٌ بِشَرَائِعِ دِينِي وَخَوَاتِيمِ عَمَلِي وَقَلْبِي لِقَلْبِكُمْ سِلْمٌ وَأَمْرِي لِأَمْرِكُمْ مُتَّبِعٌ

Translation: I call Allah, His angels, His prophets, and His Messengers as witnesses that I believe in you all, am certain of your Return, [hold to this] by the laws of my religion and the seals of my deeds, my heart is at peace with your hearts, and all my affairs follow your commands.

Closing Salawat

صَلَوَاتُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ وَعَلَى أَرْوَاحِكُمْ وَعَلَى أَجْسَادِكُمْ وَعَلَى شَاهِدِكُمْ وَعَلَى غَائِبِكُمْ

Ṣalawātu-llāhi ʿalaykum wa ʿalā arwāḥikum wa ʿalā ajsādikum wa ʿalā shāhidikum wa ʿalā ghāʾibikum

Translation: May Allah's benedictions be upon you, upon your souls, upon your bodies, upon those of you present and absent.

Personal Appeal

يَا مَوْلَايَ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ أَسْأَلُ اللَّهَ بِالشَّأْنِ الَّذِي لَكَ عِنْدَهُ أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَأَنْ يَجْعَلَنِي مَعَكُمْ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ

Translation: O my Master, O Abu Abdullah, I beseech Allah through the standing you have with Him to send blessings on Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad, and to keep me with you in this world and in the Hereafter.
